In ceramics II we will make tea sets that express your personality, raku fire, and learn how to make lidded pots. Each project in the class can be made on the wheel or with hand building techniques.
Personality Tea Set
For this project, you are asked to make a tea set that expresses a theme. You will make a teapot with a spout, handle and lid. You are asked to make matching cups as well.
Raku Firing
Raku Firing is a Japanese firing technique where potters fire glazed pieces to a certain temperature then take the pottery out of the kiln. The pottery is put in a metal bucket with newspaper or straw inside and then a lid is put on. The atmosphere in the bucket is starved for oxygen so the glaze is "reduced" resulting in beautiful metallic finishes.
Pot with lid and feet
Use the wheel or hand building to make a vessel with a lid and feet.
Unusual Drinking Vessel
The unusual drinking vessel must hold liquid and must be something you can drink out of - other than that anything goes - as long as it is unusual!
Nesting Bowls
Use the wheel or hand building to make a set of at least 3 nesting bowls. The insides of the bowls should be glazed a different color than the outside of the bowls.
Jar Heads
Learn how to make faces out of clay on a large scale jar. This project is based on historical face jugs.
